The Association Between Metabolic Syndrome and Serum Leptin
Authors
Abstract:
Objectives: The relation of metabolic syndrome components, insulin resistance and leptin has been studied in elderly women. Methods & Materials: In this cross sectional study, among 225 subjects≥60 year old who were residents of Kahrizak Charity Foundation, 133 (56 men & 77 women) were selected by cluster random sampling. Fasting serum TG, Total Cholesterol, HDL, and leptin levels were measured. Results: In healthy individuals, mean age of men and women were 76.88±6.56 and 79.49±7.96 years old and in metabolic syndrome ones were 71.00±5.19 and 77.94±7.24, respectively. A total of 133 subjects were studied. Fifteen men and thirty three women were diagnosed as metabolic syndrome. There was a strong significant correlation between serum leptin level and metabolic syndrome as well as body mass index (BMI) in both sexeses (P<0.001). Among metabolic syndrome components, waist circumference showed similar correlation in both sexes. In both sexes the association between metabolic syndrome (IDF) and serum leptin was significant even after adjustment for each metabolic syndrome component with significant correlation and these components collectively (P<0.005). The association was not significant after adjustment for waist circumference. Conclusion: The current study has found that the association between metabolic syndrome and leptin in elderly might be mediated through waist circumference.

BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a serious public health problem. It is an important risk factor of cardiovascular disease in developed countries. Adipose tissue considered as an organ that releases a variety of molecules referred to adipocytokines such as leptin. Polymorphism of their related genes may play an important role in development of MetS. The aim of this study was to determine...

Introduction:Obesity is one of the most serious challenges of our era, with significant health consequences and high economic burden for health systems. Therefore, many countries have developed political agendas to cope with this ever-rising challenge. Along with chemical medications that are developed to manage obesity, researchers have focused on some natural ingredients and herbal extracts w...
full textThe Association between Macronutrient Intake and the Metabolic Syndrome in Yazdian Adult Population
Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a collection of metabolic disorders including abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, high glucose levels, and high blood pressure. The macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the effective factors in the occurrence of MetS. This study aimed to determine the association between the macronutrients intake and MetS in 20-69 year-old adult popu...
full textAssociation between serum uric acid level and metabolic syndrome components
BACKGROUND Serum uric acid levels is reported to be associated with a variety of cardiometabolic risk factors; however, its direct association with metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains controversial. Thus, we examined the association of serum uric acid concentrations with the MetS components. METHODS MetS was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) criteria. This c...
